Vibe Coding and the Judgment Gap: Why Deployment Speed Is Not Organizational Competence

The Specific Problem Vibe Coding Creates

A recent piece in MIT Technology Review argues that vibe coding - the practice of using AI to generate and deploy functional software with minimal technical oversight - is collapsing the distance between idea and deployment so rapidly that organizations cannot build the governance structures fast enough to manage what they are now capable of building. This is not a generic AI risk story. It is a specific organizational failure mode, and it deserves a more precise diagnosis than "companies need better AI governance."

The argument in that piece frames the core risk as a judgment problem: organizations now have deployment capability that exceeds their evaluative capacity. I think that framing is correct, but it understates the theoretical depth of what is happening. The issue is not simply that companies lack judgment. It is that the sequence in which competence develops within algorithmically-mediated environments is structurally inverted from what classical organizational theory assumes.

The Competence Sequencing Problem

Classical coordination theory - markets, hierarchies, and networks alike - assumes that actors bring pre-existing competence to coordination problems. A firm hires engineers who already know how to evaluate software. A market prices outputs produced by actors who already understand what they are producing. Vibe coding breaks this assumption in a specific way: it allows actors to produce outputs whose properties they cannot independently evaluate. The production capability arrives before the evaluative schema.

This inversion is precisely what the Algorithmic Literacy Coordination framework addresses in platform labor contexts. Kellogg, Valentine, and Christin (2020) document how workers in algorithmically-mediated environments develop awareness of system outputs without developing accurate structural understanding of how those outputs are generated. These are categorically different competencies, and vibe coding conflates them by making the first competency so frictionless that it creates the illusion that the second competency is either unnecessary or already present.

Why Procedural Governance Responses Will Fail

The predictable organizational response to the vibe coding risk is procedural: checklists, approval workflows, deployment gates, security audits. These responses are not wrong, but they address the wrong level of the problem. Hatano and Inagaki (1986) draw a useful distinction between routine expertise and adaptive expertise. Routine expertise - procedural knowledge - succeeds in stable, anticipated contexts. Adaptive expertise - principled understanding of why a system behaves as it does - succeeds in novel contexts.

The risk profile of AI-generated code is precisely that it creates novel failure modes faster than procedural checklists can be updated to anticipate them. A governance checklist written to evaluate code produced by trained engineers does not transfer cleanly to code produced through iterative prompting, because the failure modes are structurally different. Organizations that respond to vibe coding risk by adding procedural layers are applying routine expertise to a domain that requires adaptive expertise. The result is governance that is formally present but functionally inadequate.

Rahman (2021) makes a related point about what he calls the invisible cage: workers subject to algorithmic control develop behavioral adaptations to visible constraints without understanding the underlying structure that generates those constraints. The organizational analog here is that firms develop governance responses to visible deployment risks without building structural understanding of how AI-generated code creates latent risks that fall outside the visible constraint set.

What Structural Schema Induction Would Look Like Here

Gentner's (1983) structure-mapping theory suggests that far transfer - the ability to apply understanding across genuinely novel contexts - requires learning structural relationships rather than surface-level procedures. Applied to the vibe coding problem, this means that effective organizational governance requires engineers and decision-makers to develop accurate schemas for how AI code generation produces systematic error patterns, not just checklists for catching known error types.

This distinction has a concrete implication. Organizations that invest in training their people to understand the structural properties of large language model outputs - where they are systematically overconfident, where they hallucinate plausible-looking but incorrect logic, how their training data distribution affects their reliability in edge cases - will develop governance capacity that transfers across novel deployment contexts. Organizations that invest only in procedural approval workflows will find those workflows obsolete each time the AI tooling changes, which is to say, continuously.

The Broader Organizational Theory Point

The vibe coding case is a useful test of a broader theoretical claim: that algorithmically-mediated production environments require organizations to build competence endogenously, through structured engagement with the systems themselves, rather than importing pre-existing competence from adjacent domains. Schor et al. (2020) argue that platform dependence creates a form of structural precarity because participants cannot develop independent evaluative capacity outside the platform. The organizational version of this dynamic is firms becoming dependent on AI-generated outputs they lack the structural understanding to independently assess. The deployment speed that vibe coding enables does not solve this problem. It accelerates it.
